A Perfect World
Joan T. Wangler
written when she was about 11
Can you imagine a perfect world?
A world without any fear
A world where only friendship thrives
And hope throughout the year
A world where there’s no question
About religion, creed, or race
A world where one could speak out loud
And not run to hide her face?
Now these may seem like fantasies
Or maybe bold-faced lies
But this world was envisioned
In a newborn infant’s eyes.
The Peace, Unity and Healing Mile is one of the twelve mural miles of The Art Miles Mural Project. This mile was birthed on September 11, 2001 in Washington, DC and a general outpouring of emotion was felt by people everywhere from all over the world. Mural painting seemed to be one way of helping people deal with the tragic event and their own feelings and over 180 murals arrived that were up to 40 feet long, portraying a deep seeded belilef in PEACE. Since that time PEACE murals have been created in "marathon events" involving thousands of people who paint incredible murals in just a few short hours displaying the world wide echo of a quest for PEACE.
Part of this mile involves the creation of a special mural designed by The Art Miles Art Director, Cady Macasa and is called The Manhattan Memorial Mural. This is a 500 foot segment illustrating the history of the United States of America with vignette portrayals on international influence--the very characteristic that makes Americans what they are--descendents of every possible country on this earth. This mural also illustrates that this tragedy affected over 80 other countries who lost citizens that day and therefore, the entire mile will be dedicated to them, the survivors and their families. (Among these victims, was the beloved brother of Michele Little, our Music Director, and who we also honor and send our special prayers and hopes that such horrible acts as a result of hate will stop and that each of us can understand that peace begins with each individual as we continue our journey to create global harmony through art.
