Art Miles Murals Project 2008
The Art Miles Mural Project www.the-art-miles-mural-project.org was founded
more than 12 years ago by retired UN Executive, Joanne Tawfilis and her
husband Dr. Fouad Tawfilis. Their project is a passionate and colorful
12 year movement combining the efforts of children and adults worldwide
to promote global peace and environmental awareness and protection through
mural art.
“CELEBRATION of the SEA” is a television pilot/DVD documenting
a collaboration of professional artists, musicians and cinematographers
from California and Hawaii, whose vision is to inspire a multi-cultural
group of underprivileged children from Hawaii's premier childcare provider,
Kamaaina Kids, www.kamaainakids.com.
Their organization serves Hawaii's youth from tots to teens with quality
ongoing education and enrichment programs statewide. Kamaaina Kids will
participate in a celebration of the ocean and it's conservation by participating
in the creation of a mural painting overseen by one of Hawaii's premiere
Nature Artist, Patrick Ching, www.patrickching.com.
One of the very unique things about this first time event is that it takes
place on the ocean, aboard Oahu's finest power catamaran, the Kai Oli
Oli, www.oceanjoycrusies.com
Children will be treated to a day aboard the 65' Kai Oli Oli catamaran
for an ocean adventure of a lifetime as they explore the pristine coastline
of Leeward Oahu. The children will learn about the sea and participate
in the Art Miles Mural Project, a global campaign devoted to World Peace,
Human Rights and Environmental awareness and protection thru art.
The adventure begins as the Kamaaina Kids board the Kai Oli Oli for a
wild spinner dolphin encounter as they surf the bow wake of the boat.
The crew shares important information regarding the sea-life and local
reefs. Next is an up close and personal swim, in crystal clear blue waters,
with the indigenous sea creatures of Hawaii, such as Green Sea Turtles,
Spotted Eagle Rays, including a wide variety of fish and colorful coral.
The kids will be amazed at the beauty of Hawaii's underwater world.
The Kai Oli Oli will return to the dock at 10:30am, then the kids go to
the J.W. Marriott Ihilani Resort and Spa Childcare Center where they’ll
be greeted by Marine Debris expert, Carey Morishige, of NOAA (The National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) Ms. Morishige will explain about
the negative effects pollution, such as marine debris, has on the world’s
ocean environment, even in places like Hawaii.
The group will break for lunch at Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park and discuss
their strategy to create the first ever,
" CELEBRATION of the SEA” Hawaii Art Miles Mural
Patrick Ching and the kids will collaborate on what they foresee highlighting
in the mural and do first sketches. Everyone will agree on the story they'll
tell through their art mural, then they’ll re-board the Kai Oli
Oli for the afternoon cruise departing the Ko Olina dock at 4pm. It will
take the Captain, Shane Griffin, about 40 minutes to reach the most remote
part of Oahu, the majestic Makua Valley.
Patrick and his team of young artists will create their masterpiece as
they sit on the bow of the boat floating in the pristine coastal waters
of the Leeward side with the incredible Makua Valley as the backdrop.
To add a sense of enlightenment to the setting, Jazz Musician and Teacher
of the Year Award Winner, Alec Briguglio, who is now a Music Director
at Punahou School, will play live music in conjunction to several of his
tracks that will be featured on SEA of JAZZ.
Art Miles Murals Poet Laureate, Kristofor G. Szasz, will add a unique
element to the event by delivering an original piece of performance poetry
written specifically for the event.
The HAWAII ART MILES MURALS team will capture three elements of the SEA,
it’s beauty, the negative impact of careless human behavior and
most importantly, solutions to the ongoing problems facing our marine
environment today. Displaying their feelings through the brush to canvas
will be one positive step in the right direction to help educate the public
on the importance of marine environmental awareness and protection.
